New James Bond Casting Details Rule Out Idris Elba & Henry Cavill
The latest update explains why the new 007 actor likely won’t be Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Henry Cavill, or Idris Elba.
Earlier this year, Amazon MGM Studios gained full creative control of the James Bond franchise from Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. It was announced just this week that the studio has tapped Denis Villeneuve to direct the first entry in the new installment of Bond movies.
Questions have now naturally started arising over who will play Bond in Villeneuve’s movie, as there hasn’t been an official announcement at this time.
According to a recent report from Variety, however, Cavill, Taylor-Johnson, and Elba — all three of whom have previously been rumored for the role — likely won’t be Bond as Amazon is looking for a “British actor under the age of 30.” Taylor-Johnson is 35, Cavill is 42, and Elba is 52, so they wouldn’t meet that criteria.
That said, one of the three actors on Amazon’s wishlist for Bond is Jacob Elordi, who is Australian. Variety’s article notes, “that would not be a deal-breaker as far as Amazon is concerned; remember Aussie George Lazenby starred in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” This means that there may be some flexibility within the casting rules.
The other two actors on Amazon’s wishlist are Spider-Man’s Tom Holland and Babygirl’s Harris Dickinson.
Villeneuve has only signed on to helm one James Bond movie for Amazon MGM Studios at this time; however, that could change if the film is a hit. While “the pace is about to accelerate significantly” on the next James Bond movie, it likely still won’t arrive until 2928 as “anything sooner would be impossible to pull off, given the film’s scale, sources say.” Villeneuve is also planning to film Dune: Messiah later this year “to make an expected December 2026 release date.”
