Netizens slam Tinubu for delayed condolence message to victims of Benue killings

Many Nigerians have taken to the comment section of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s post, where he condemned the recent killings in Benue, criticizing him for addressing the attack and offering condolences to the victims a day after the tragic incident.

About 100 people were killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen in an overnight raid in Yelewata, a village in Benue on Friday. Scores have remained missing while many sustained injuries in the attack.

Pope Leo XIV and some prominent Nigerian politicians, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, condemned the attack and released statements following the attack.

Tinubu released a statement on Sunday night condemning the attack and ordering security operatives to arrest the perpetrators.

“I have been briefed on the senseless bloodletting in Benue State. Enough is enough! I have directed the security agencies to act decisively, arrest perpetrators of these evil acts on all sides of the conflict, and prosecute them,” the statement read in part.

His statement has stirred reactions from Nigerians on X who stormed his comment section with criticism.

“After 48 hours? This man, do you really have a heart? You were just briefed after 48 hours of the massacre that 200 people lost their lives? The Pope in Rome already spoke about it.

“Videos of burnt children charred beyond recognition already litter social media. And you made no statement for 2days. You are not only useless and incompetent. You are horrible, soulless and heartless. 200 human beings and you kept mute? Alhaji, SHAME ON YOU SIR!,” one user wrote.

While some users knocked him for releasing a statement late, others have criticised him for the approach he has chosen to resolve the conflict with.

“I know it’s still early, but why is dialogue even considered as an option here for people who have been oppressed in their own land? Reconcile what? I mean when there’s something like repentant Boko Haram members existing, my head shouldn’t be too hot but sadly it is.”
