, the iconic third-person cover shooter franchise by , is heading to the big screen via a adaptation, with Deadpool 2 director in negotiations to helm the movie.
Originally a stunt performer and double for big Hollywood names such as Brad Pitt and Jean-Claude Van Damme, Leitch made his directorial debut in 2014 for John Wick with Chad Stahelski, and would go on to direct multiple action flicks such as 2017’s Atomic Blonde, 2022’s Bullet Train and most recently, last year’s stuntman-appreciation action epic The Fall Guy. With his repertoire, Leitch seems the perfect fit for a Gears of War adaptation, a series well known for its violence, gore and healthy dose of glorious masculinity.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch will also double up as its producer alongside his wife, Kelly McCormick, under their production company 87North (Love Hurts, Violent Night), and will work closely with game developer The Coalition. The film’s script is set to be written by Jon Spaihts, best known for his work on 2021’s Dune and its 2024 sequel.
The Gears of War video games follow society’s near-collapse after the events of Emergence Day, which marked the appearance of humanoid underground beings known as the Locust and sparked an all-out war that drove humanity to the brink of extinction. Most of the franchise’s five mainline games follow protagonist Marcus Fenix, a disgraced sergeant tasked with leading a team known as Delta Squad and fighting back against the Locust horde, so it seems likely that the adaptation will focus on either Fenix or the other members of his team.
No further information has been revealed on the film’s plot, cast, or even whether it will be live-action or animated. Netflix first secured the rights to the Gears of War franchise in November 2022, with ambitious plans for the future, as apart from the upcoming feature film, the iconic shooter is also set to receive an adult animated series, and more, upon success.
