Netflix has capitalized on the wave of murder mysteries that fans have flocked to over the years. Whether it be the Knives Out movies or the Adolescence TV series, the streamer knows viewers love sleuths. The Residence kicks it up a notch by adding a political twist to the murder occurring at the White House.
The Chief Butler, Giancarlo Esposito's A.B. Wynter, is killed, crafting a detective game. However, as entertaining as the show is, there are key issues. It comes with some plot holes that derail the creative momentum in a big way.

Britt Lower revealed the significant connections between blink-and-you-miss-it moments that link Season 1 and Season 2 of Severance.
In The Residence's eight episodes, Cordelia Cupp (a consultant with the Metropolitan Police Department) works with FBI Special Agent, Park, to discern what happened. After amassing a series of clues, they attribute the tragedy to Lilly Schumacher, the President's social secretary. She tried to poison Wynter after convincing him to join her for a drink. She'd end up bludgeoning him to death with a clock.
The finale confirms Cupp learned that Wynter discovered Lilly's corruption with finances and overall embezzlement schemes at the Oval Office. He logged them into his journal as codes. However, it begs the question, "why would he meet her?" They had an argument when he confronted her about it and said he'd fire her once the night's gala was done. .
. It doesn't make sense he wouldn't spill the beans. He had Haney as his successor, too, so he could have emailed her. His keeping things a secret doesn't add up. Furthermore, going to drink with an enraged, unhinged enemy is plot convenience to force an angle where Lilly would try to fake his death as a suicide after attacking him.

Adolescence Has 1 Issue With Its Most Terrifying Criminal (But It's Not Jamie)
The four episodes of Netflix's Adolescence does well to detail Jamie's character portrait but it makes an error with someone more sinister than him.
Lilly eventually hid the clock away and had a door to that little nook sealed up. Cupp notices it, which leads to her summoning the staff and querying about it. By this time, she knows Lilly is the fiend. .

. It doesn't add up that someone wouldn't catch the site of the murder has been changed. To that point, for Lilly to seal the room, workers had to do it. It has fans wondering why these workers wouldn't highlight they were being forced to tamper with a murder scene.
It's very odd that Lilly would do that and expect total silence. Had the series shown her paying people off, this would have fit. Instead, the staff was either forgetful, didn't care, or didn't mind fixing a crime scene to suit some narrative. It should have been a red flag.

The final plot hole comes with Wynter's fake suicide. Lilly wants everyone to think he slit his wrists and died. . Autopsies, after all, have toxicology reports. This would have caused a scandal, highlighting that there was a murderer inside the White House.
. The show doesn't even explain how Lilly could disguise this at the scene of the crime. Cupp, Park and forensics should have seen a wound or bump on his head. Either way, Lilly could not physically hide her sins. Ultimately, The Residence is a quirky puzzle, but these plot holes do diminish its impact and how believable the whodunit is supposed to be.
