NDLEA launches anti-narcotic operations at Benin City airport
The Benin Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking through air travel with the launch of anti-narcotic operations at the Benin City Airport.
This development followed a working visit on Monday by the NDLEA Edo State Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, to the General Manager of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Akinbinu Felix. Discussions centred on strategies to fortify the airport against drug barons.
“We recognise the pivotal role that Benin City Airport plays in transportation dynamics. The command’s grand strategy is to make Edo State impregnable to drug cartels by air, water and land. This way, we can create a safer society by preventing the trafficking of illicit drugs,” Ofoyeju stated.
Emphasising the importance of vigilance and collaboration, he said, “A dedicated NDLEA presence at the airport aims to implement robust screening processes and strategies to intercept illicit substances before they get to end users.”
Ofoyeju outlined the agency’s comprehensive mandate, which includes halting cannabis cultivation, exposing clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, impounding illegal drugs, and reducing drug demand through enforcement, public enlightenment, and rehabilitation initiatives.
He also highlighted ongoing public awareness campaigns aimed at educating citizens about the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking. Additional measures include a toll-free hotline for counselling and the promotion of drug testing mechanisms introduced by the NDLEA Chairman, Brig General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd).
Felix commended the NDLEA’s initiatives, pledging FAAN’s support for the operations. “The fight against drug trafficking requires a united front. We are committed to working with the NDLEA in ensuring that the Benin City Airport remains free from drug-related activities,” he assured.
Recounting his previous collaboration with the NDLEA at the Port Harcourt Airport, Felix expressed readiness to enhance the agency’s efforts and was decorated by Ofoyeju as a War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) partner. He also received an NDLEA souvenir in recognition of his support.
