Navy launches Special Operations in Benue

Nigerian Navy has established its Special Operations Command (NNSOC)

In a decisive move to address persistent insecurity in Benue State, the Nigerian Navy has established its Special Operations Command (NNSOC) on the North Bank of the River Benue.

The new command is set to become a critical component of Nigeria’s security infrastructure, aimed at curbing violence, banditry, and other forms of criminality in the area.

The NNSOC will incorporate elite units, such as the Special Boat Service (SBS) and the Deep Blue Maritime Security Unit (MSU), with additional operational support from the Nigerian Navy Marines.

This fusion of tactical and amphibious expertise marks a significant escalation in Federal Government’s security strategy, particularly in riverine and inland conflict zones like Benue.

The establishment of the command comes amid rising concerns over killings and attacks in rural parts of the state.

Governor Hyacinth Alia has taken what many see as a bold and proactive approach to ensure the protection of lives and property.

The presence of the Navy in a largely landlocked Benue River area is unconventional but underscores the urgency and seriousness to tackle the security challenges the state is facing.

Security analysts note that the integration of maritime forces into inland security operations reflects a broader strategy to leverage Nigeria’s full range of defence capabilities.

The River Benue, a vital natural asset, will now serve not only as a lifeline for agriculture and transportation but also as a strategic route for rapid deployment and patrol by naval forces.

Local communities have expressed cautious optimism about the development, with traditional leaders and civil society groups urging close cooperation between security forces and residents to ensure intelligence sharing and long-term peace.

The Nigerian Navy’s move, backed by the state government, sends a strong signal that Benue State will not be left vulnerable to the forces of violence.

With the NNSOC now operational, stakeholders hope this marks the beginning of a new era of stability in one of Nigeria’s most troubled states.
