Benue killings: David Mark warns citizens may resort to self-defence

Published 19 hours ago2 minute read

Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has condemned the continued killings in Benue State, warning that the failure of the government to stop the violence could leave citizens with no choice but to take up self-defence.

Reacting to the recent massacre of innocent people across communities in Benue, Senator Mark described the attacks as barbaric, inhumane, and intolerable. He lamented the government’s inability to stop what he called a slow-moving war against unarmed civilians.

Special Adviser to Senator David Mark, Paul Mumeh, in a statement on Monday, quoted him to have said, “This is no longer acceptable. Government cannot continue to watch helplessly while our people are being killed in their homes. If this persists, people may be forced to defend themselves,” he said.

Senator Mark said that the first and most important duty of any government is to protect the lives and property of its citizens.

He warned that continued silence or inaction amounts to complicity and a complete breakdown of the social contract between the state and its people.

He called on the Federal Government to live up to its constitutional responsibilities and take swift, decisive action to end the bloodshed. He also urged Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Benue State Government to scale up internal security efforts and ensure stronger coordination with federal forces.

In a message to traditional rulers, community leaders, and local vigilantes, Senator Mark encouraged cooperation with security agencies to expose the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.

To the people of Benue, he expressed solidarity and called for unity in the face of adversity.

He added, “This is a painful time, but we must not allow fear to divide us. We must stand together, support one another, and speak with one voice against these attacks. Let us remain law-abiding but vigilant.”
