Nassau police ID victim in fatal alleged road rage crash

Published 1 month ago2 minute read

The Nassau County police on Monday identified a motorcyclist killed in an alleged road rage crash in North Hills as Ibis Baez, 29, of the Bronx.

The victim was riding a 2016 Kawasaki at about 5 p.m. Friday east on the Long Island Expressway in North Hills, police said last week. Brian Noll, 64, of the upstate town of Sico and driving a Ford F-250 east on the LIE, "intentionally swerved," and pinned the person identified Monday as Baez against a guardrail, striking him on the highway, according to a Nassau police news release.

Police said both motorists were trying to exit the highway at the same time when the motorcyclist struck the mirror of Noll's Ford F-250. Noll then allegedly opened his door to try to hit him and then swerved to drive him off the road into the guardrail, police said.

Baez was declared dead at the scene. Noll was charged with second-degree murder in connection with Baez's death. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Saturday.

Friends and family of Baez could not be reached for comment Monday. Through various social media posts, friends described him as an avid fisherman. Photographs on social media show a makeshift memorial of candles, flowers and Baez's picture set up near the section of the LIE where he died.

A judge set bail for Noll at $300,00 cash or $1.5 million bond. He is set to return to court May 14.

A GoFundMe account for Baez's family, which had raised nearly $7,500 Monday, said he serviced air conditioning systems on Long Island.

"Ibis was a great human being with a peaceful soul, not one violent part in his body, and never harmed anyone. For his life to be cut short doing what he loved is unexplainable," a message on the online fundraiser said. "He loved fishing with such passion it was hard to keep up, always on some mission to check off his to-do list in life goals."

Friends said a memorial for Baez is planned Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Ortiz Funeral Home in the Bronx.

Every 7 minutes on average a traffic crash causing death, injury or significant property damage happens on Long Island. A Newsday investigation found that traffic crashes killed more than 2,100 people between 2014 and 2023 and seriously injured more than 16,000 people.
