Authorities said one of the suspects threatened to stab the victim with a knife during their operation. After the incident, officers on patrol responded and began chasing the suspects, who tried to flee.
According to TV47, one suspect was shot and killed, while the other abandoned the motorcycle and escaped on foot.
"One of the suspects was gunned down while the other one abandoned the motorbike they were using and ran away on foot," the police said.
Authorities confirmed they recovered the stolen phone and returned it to the terrified victim.
A knife, believed to have been used in the threat, along with the getaway motorbike, was also found at the scene.
Local residents expressed concern over a rise in thefts, particularly at night, leaving them feeling constantly on edge.
"These robbers grab mobile phones from people and disappear before anyone has a chance to respond. We hope this will send a message to the rest," one resident said.
Police reassured Eastleigh residents of their safety, noting that officers have been stationed in various areas across Nairobi to help curb theft incidents.
The police shooting in Eastleigh isn't the first time law enforcement has killed a suspect. In October 2024, officers in Kisumu shot dead a suspect linked to the murder of Wells Fargo Human Resource manager Willis Ayieko.
Nyanza Regional Police Commander Patrick Tito confirmed the suspect was located at a hotel near Kisumu Polytechnic, where he had fled after leaving Gem area in Siaya county.

During the operation, authorities recovered a pistol believed to be linked to other criminal activities in the region.
Tito emphasised that the operation was part of an effort to combat escalating crime in Kisumu, reaffirming the police's commitment to restoring security.
He stressed that law enforcement would not allow criminals to roam freely and endanger the lives of the common citizen.
This event underscored the growing concerns about violent crime in Kisumu, where recent incidents heightened fear among residents.
On the same week, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested the first suspect, Victor Okoth, in Dandora Phase IV, Nairobi.
Okoth was accused of withdrawing more than KSh 100,000 from Ayieko's mobile account, using the money to rent a house and purchase goods.
Okoth was charged in Siaya Law Courts on Wednesday, October 30.
