The five individuals, Iddy Augustine, Jeffrey Obado, Newton Kimani, Philip Kilili, and Sharon Mwikali, were reportedly detained after an incident involving a cracked television screen at a spot where they had been seated.

According to Human Rights Activist Boniface Mwangi, who broke the news on social media, the arrest occurred shortly after midnight.

Mwangi claims the arrest was ordered by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Riruta without clear justification beyond the damaged television.

“They called me past midnight, and I informed Geoffrey Mosiria,” Mwangi said.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest remain unclear, with Mwangi alleging the arrest was arbitrary and lacked due process.

However, the arrests have triggered a wave of mixed reactions from the public, many of whom have taken to social media to express their opinions.

Some showed support for the action, while others criticised the perceived high-handedness of the county officers in general.

Mandela Nelson Odeny commented:

“Majority of Nairobi County employees behave as if they own the city. Wacha iwarambe (let them face the music).”

Willie Njoroge remarked:

“Let kanjus (county officials) taste a dose of their concoction. How many people are in jail because of kanju? Mzazi ametoka Keroka na mandizi na ngwaci anashikwa ati ni hawker.”

Ricky Nyands added:

“This is the best news I’ve received today. Let them feel what it’s like to get arrested. These people can frustrate you in town, with no mercy even for our parents.”

Erastus Kamau stated:

“There is law. If they maliciously destroyed the TV, they should be charged in a court of law like any other citizens—or are you now championing impunity?”

Giff Ka echoed similar sentiments:

“If they destroyed someone’s property, they deserved it. They should be charged heavily as a lesson to others.”

As of now, the five remain in custody, with no official comment from Nairobi County officials or the Riruta Police Station regarding the specific charges.

Two months ago, Nairobi County officials were in another scandal after they dumped garbage at the KPLC offices.

In the wake of the incident, Governor Johnson Sakaja condemned the act, stating that it violates the county’s policies and values.

While appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Administration and Internal Security, Sakaja announced the interdiction of two senior officers over the saga.

During the meeting, DCI director Amin Mohamed disclosed that more city-county officials had been summoned over the matter.
