Movie: After the Wedding

Published 3 months ago1 minute read

Delectable Mads Mikkelsen, a manager of a struggling orphanage in India, is sent to Copenhagen, Denmark, in order to personally secure a large donation from a mysterious benefactor.

Okay, so the time had come for me to unload one of my top three Danish movies of all time: I've seen it 15 times in the last few years if I've seen it once (and after writing this review, I may be forced to indulge in it again!), a real 'guilty pleasure'.

It was written by my favorite Danish scriptwriter, the prolific Anders Thomas Jensen, (who directed only 11 movies so far, but who wrote a total of 60) and was directed by his frequent collaborator Susanne Bier. (They did 6 movies together). It's Screenwriting 101 at its best.

It's a sentimental tear-jerker about fractured relationships and intense family secrets, full of emotional twists and pleasant surprises. It's exceedingly Danish, rich and humane. Co-starring the terrific Sidse Babett Knudsen. If you plan on seeing it, please do not read anything about it beforehand, just jump in and enjoy.

The Trailer.

And please do not, under any circumstances, watch the 2019 American re-make with Julianne Moore & Michelle William, not even for comparison reasons.
