Mother of the Bride Wants to Wear a Bridal Gown to Daughter's Wedding

Published 13 hours ago4 minute read

If we know anything about the internet, it's that people love to have opinions—especially about weddings that aren't their own. In fact, there are subreddits dedicated to discussing nuptials dos and don'ts, including r/weddingshaming. The latest viral discourse surrounds a mother who wants to wear a wedding dress to her own daughter's ceremony.

A dress shop owner, who goes by the TikToker username @bridalinfluencerkasia, sent Reddit and TikTok users into a tizzy when she posted a video of a confrontation she had with a mother of the bride. In the flick, the mother of the bride, whose name is Barb, comes into the store (mind you, 40 minutes before her appointment) to get alterations done to a wedding dress she intends to wear to her daughter Kelly's wedding.

The shop owner explains that Kelly messaged her criteria for the mother-of-the-bride dress, which included jewel tones such as plum, amethyst, and ruby. Barb responds that she would like to wear a shortened version of the bridal gown she brought in instead.

The owner pushes back by saying, "But you're the mother of the bride, and that's a wedding gown." Barb fires back, "But it won't look like one once the train is gone."

"But that's white," the owner says, to which Barb responds, "It's okay."

The owner continues, saying, "I'm sorry, please don't take it personally. I'm trying to be respectful of the bride's wishes and in this situation, she sent me criteria."

Barb then says, "I don't think you see my vision here. It won't look like a wedding dress once it's all done."

"But it's white," the owner reminds her. "Have you thought this through for the wedding day? Like, your daughter, how she's going to react." Barb asserts that her daughter "won't mind."

The owner let out an involuntary chuckle and continues: "I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh. I'm just trying to be realistic. If the bride had not sent me criteria as to what you should be wearing the day of the wedding. I mean she didn't pick your dress, by no means, she wants you to pick your dress, but the color needs to be in the colors that she asked me to show you."

Things take a tense turn when Barb asks, "So you're not willing to help me here?" The owner responds with, "Of course I'm here to help you. I will totally show you any mother of the bride dress... Your daughter has spent hundreds, now thousands of dollars in my store. I have a responsibility to her, and she wants you in a different color." She proceeds to point to Barb's wedding dress while saying, "If that's for her wedding, I can't touch the dress."

They continue on with Barb exchanging, "So my money is no good here?"

"Your money is good here, yes, if you want to shop for a mother's dress, I'd be happy to help you," the owner says. "But I'm shaken up by this. I hope you understand because I can't imagine doing this to your daughter. She's my client. You don't see any issue with this at all?"

Barb continues to say that it won't "look" like a wedding dress with the alterations done, while the owner says she cannot "ethically" do the alterations because she has "integrity."

"I mean so what are you gonna do? You're gonna call the bride now or something?" Barb asks before knocking things over on the owner's desk, prompting the owner to declare, "We're done. This is diabolical." Although Barb claims the the action was an accident, the owner continues to shut down their appointment, while disclosing she'll be calling the bride to explain the situation.

Throughout the video, the owner is visibly shaken up and even writes on the screen, "I'm starting to have a panic attack here. Imagine the bride."

Droves of users came to the owner's defense on both platforms, leaving sentiments like, "Props to her for standing firm against the mother of the bride. This lady is obviously not used to being told no" in the comments. Many users shared their own wedding nightmares, while others expressed the video appears staged.
