Moroccan medical team performs complex surgeries in Nouakchott, opportunity for exchange of medical expertise

Published 2 days ago2 minute read

A high-level Moroccan medical team conducted a series of complex surgical procedures in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, at the National Hospital Center. This initiative is part of an advanced health partnership between the center and Morocco’s Ibn Sina University Hospital.

This medical campaign, conducted with the participation of both Moroccan and Mauritanian surgeons, aims to provide essential care for patients suffering from complicated conditions related to the liver, bile ducts, and pancreas. It also seeks to expand the capabilities of local teams through knowledge transfer and the exchange of advanced medical expertise.

The surgeries are overseen by a Moroccan medical team made up of renowned doctors with international credentials, working alongside Mauritanian specialists who are actively participating in both the operations and training sessions. This reflects a bilateral cooperation approach designed to gradually achieve self-sufficiency in such sensitive medical interventions.

In a special statement to the Mauritanian News Agency, the Director General of the National Hospital Center, Mr. Cherif Jedou Mini, noted that this initiative is part of a joint action plan agreed upon last April, which aims to establish sustainable cooperation between the two health institutions in Mauritania and Morocco.

He emphasized that this medical mission presents a valuable opportunity for Mauritanian healthcare professionals to gain both practical and theoretical experience in dealing with liver and pancreatic diseases. One of the key objectives, he added, is to reduce the need to send patients abroad for treatment, thereby alleviating financial and emotional burdens.

For his part, Professor Othman Mouhihem, one of the Moroccan surgeons leading this campaign, highlighted that the mission is not limited to surgical operations. It also includes lectures and training sessions for Mauritanian physicians, meant to enhance their skills and equip them with the scientific and practical tools needed to keep pace with medical advancements in the field.

He added that such initiatives embody the spirit of active cooperation between the two countries and help ensure that Mauritanian patients can receive appropriate care in their own country, reducing medical evacuations and expenses, in addition to promoting capacity building.

This initiative stands as a successful example of South-South cooperation in the health sector and reinforces the bonds of brotherhood and solidarity between Morocco and Mauritania.
