More specialists, senior nurses leave Goaso Municipal Hospital for greener pastures
Staff attrition has affected the Goaso Municipal Hospital in the Ahafo Region, with 59 specialists and senior nurses leaving the facility for better opportunities abroad, Dr. James Ankomah, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, has revealed.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Goaso, Dr. Ankomah described the situation as concerning and attributed it partly to poor working conditions. He highlighted the issues of lack of motivation, low remuneration, and the high cost of residential accommodation as factors that need to be urgently addressed to retain health personnel in the region.
“Many hospital staff and health workers spend a significant portion of their meager salaries on rent, which adds financial pressure on them,” Dr. Ankomah stated. He called on the government to construct residential accommodation and improve the conditions of service for health workers.
In a related interview, Dr. Akosua Owusu-Sarpong, the Ahafo Regional Director of Health Services, suggested that the government could explore a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement to provide residential accommodation for health workers. She also appealed for modern medical devices and equipment, particularly ventilation machines for the hospital's Intensive Care Unit. Additionally, she emphasized the need for regional medical stores in the area.
