Mayer and Ryan rematch for the WBO welterweight title in a heated grudge match with a potential undisputed title bout looming for the winner.
Mayer (20-2, 5 KOs) dethroned Ryan (7-2-1, 3 KOs) by majority decision in a Fight of the Year contender when the pair clashed at Madison Square Garden's The Theatre in New York this past September.
The night, however, was shrouded in controversy before a single punch had even been thrown. When Ryan walked out of her hotel to travel to the arena for fight night, she was promptly attacked with a can of red paint by an unidentified perpetrator — an attack Ryan believes was set up by Mayer's team. Ryan was forced back into her hotel room to shower and change clothes before she resumed her journey to the arena.
The Brit was interviewed when she arrived at Madison Square Garden and was visibly shaken by the random act. Her team advised her not to go through with the bout, but Ryan insisted on fighting; after all, fighters don't get paid unless they enter the ring, and Ryan wasn't willing to pull out from the biggest fight of her life.
The controversy surrounding the buildup to the first fight and the slugfest that followed it makes for a massive rematch tonight in Las Vegas.
The Mayer vs. Ryan 2 prelims begin at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+, with a main card beginning at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN and main event ring walks expected at 11 p.m. ET.
