Michigan State hits home run with its rumored athletic director choice

Published 3 days ago2 minute read

It's hard to believe that it's been almost a month since Michigan State let go of Alan Haller and appointed Tom Izzo as the interim co-athletic director to fill that role until a replacement was found.

Well, it looks like Michigan State has officially found its guy.

On Sunday afternoon, Pete Thamel reported that Michigan State was expected to hire Georgia Tech athletic director J Batt who was responsible for the football program's turnaround and has been known as an elite fundraiser which is exactly what the Spartans need.

Batt was the associate athletic director at East Carolina and then the deputy AD at Alabama right after from 2017-2022. He was hired at Georgia Tech and immediately made some changes. He fired Josh Pastner and replaced him with Damon Stoudemire who seems to be turning the program around. The Yellow Jackets just had their first .500 season since 2020-21.

As for football, he has been responsible for a turnaround there, too. The Yellow Jackets hadn't had a winning season since 2018 under Paul Johnson but he replaced Geoff Collins with Brent Key and the new hire immediately went 7-6 in two straight years.

Georgia Tech is expected to compete for an ACC title in 2025.

Michigan State reportedly got just what they were looking for with a younger athletic director with fundraising experience and who takes football and basketball seriously. He did that at Georgia Tech and was praised for it and now he's going to get a chance in East Lansing.

This feels like a home run hire for Michigan State.
