Chandler finds Tholstrup on the lead but the young Demon, in game 15, does make the distance from 50m. The ball, however, is rushed through. Pies lead by a point, with under four minutes remaining. Could we have a draw?

Nick Daicos wins a free kick for a soft push [or touch] in the back by Ed Langdon.

“Extraordinary,” AFL great Jason Dunstall says on Fox Footy.

Daicos’ set shot drifts left, but extends the Magpies’ lead to two points, with just over five minutes remaining.

Michael Gleeson reports the crowd figure is 77,761.

Dan McStay, back in the side today, completes a big mark from about 30m out, directly in front. That was a pressure kick. The Pies are up by a point, with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Wow. Fritsch is back in the action. On the 50m line, he handballs forward, the loose ball swooped upon by Pickett, who turns and completes a special goal.

“He is an absolute superstar of this competition. He has set Melbourne alight,” former St Kilda star Leigh Montagna said in commentary on Fox Footy.

The Demons lead by five points.

It’s that man Fritsch again, this time he is front and square to rove a loose ball, and snaps successfully from the edge of the goalsquare. It’s back to one point in favour of the Magpies.

Nick Daicos completes a superb tackle on Kysaiah Pickett in the centre square. But Pickett then opts to not give the ball back to Daicos, leaving it on the turf. That’s a 50m penalty. Daicos accepts, and converts.

“A really bad mental error,” AFL great Jason Dunstall said on Fox Footy.

Billy Frampton makes a poor decision on the wing. The ball is intercepted, and leads to a brilliant Bailey Fritsch goal from the left forward pocket, just inside the boundary. The Demons are within a point.

Melbourne looked like they were going to unwind this quarter as Collingwood’s defensive net tightened and Melbourne became predictable and adventureless.

Collingwood booted the first two goals of the quarter, the first from smart-weighted short kicks inside 50 eventually for Brodie Mihocek to goal, then Max Gawn turned it over with a loose kick into the middle for a turnover to Josh Daicos to take territory forward, leading to Ned Long’s goal. Six of Collingwood’s first eight goals came from turnovers.

Collingwood were up by 20 points, and the game was teetering. Then Melbourne rallied.

Melbourne got one back through Jake Melksham when they finally delivered the ball flat to a lead-up forward. The Demons had been wasting forward entries kicking long to outnumbered forwards for either of Darcy Cameron, Darcy Moore or Jeremy Howe to intercept mark.

Bobby Hill steadied with a goal from a trip, before the Demons picked up one in the last 90 seconds from a free kick to Harrison Petty.

The Magpies were more efficient, they had Jeremy Howe dominant across half-back and Darcy Cameron lifted his output for the quarter.

Clayton Oliver lifted his game and Max Gawn had more ball around the ground, but Pickett’s influence faded.
