Meet the Cast of DC's 'Lanterns': Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, and More
The world of DC comics is as vast as the universe itself, filled with endless possibilities and innumerable characters. However, not all of these characters have been able to make a mark when it comes to cross-media adaptation, be it on television or the big screen. While characters like Superman and Batman have turned into more successful IPs, there are a few who seem to have been lying forgotten for a long time. And Green Lantern is surely one of them.

After a massively disappointing and upsetting movie attempt back in 2011 starring Ryan Reynolds, the character has been neglected for years and years since then, as far as live-action adaptations are considered. Although we did have a brief cameo from the Green Lantern Corps in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, we are yet to see a comic-accurate, live-action version of the ‘ring’ wielding superhero.
Now, fans’ dreams are closer to turning into reality thanks to the new DC co-heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran. While we will be getting Nathan Fillian’s Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman, one of the most anticipated projects of the new DC Universe has begun production: Lanterns. Based on the Green Lantern Corps, the upcoming series will bring to live-action two of DC Comics’ most beloved Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
As the anticipation grows and expectations remain sky high, here is a closer look at Lanterns, the confirmed cast, and more details.

The world of DC is one with infinite possibilities that are yet to be explored on the screen. But with DC now under the capable hands of James Gunn, fans are finally getting what they have been waiting years for: a series on the Green Lantern Corps.
Instead of making fans choose which of the many Green Lanterns is their favorite, the upcoming Lanterns series will follow an experienced and nearing retirement Lantern, Hal Jordan, and a new recruit, John Stewart, investigating a mysterious murder in Nebraska with a True Detective-esque vibe, which leads to an even greater mystery and reckonings (via Vanity Fair).
DC Studios, under Gunn and Peter Safran, has committed itself to delivering an integrated, sophisticated, and high-quality storytelling as the duo revamps the entire DCU. While the upcoming Superman will kickstart the DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, Lanterns will carry forward the work as one of DCU’s most ambitious projects. But it remains to be seen whether or not these projects will be interconnected, as is in the MCU, or simply exist in the same universe.

While we did get a Hal Jordan live-action adaptation before in the form of Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern, it wasn’t the same as the comic book versions many of us have grown up reading. But Lanterns might soon change that as the series has started production and even revealed the first look of its two lead stars. So, without further ado, here is a look at the cast of the upcoming show.

Starring as one of the most iconic Green Lanterns in the history of DC Comics, Kyle Chandler will essay the role of Hal Jordan. Known for his unwavering determination, sharp wit, and occasional recklessness, Jordan is an absolute fan favorite whom fans have been dying to see on the screen for a long time.
Chandler, known for his role in NBC’s Friday Night Lights and movies like Bloodline, is a brilliant actor who has displayed his talent to portray strong yet flawed characters with perfections. Thus, expected to bring a mix of gravitas and charisma to Lanterns as Jordan, Chandler so far seems to fit the role of the ageing Lantern veteran. As one of the most experienced members of the Green Lantern Corps, Jordan’s leadership will likely shape the show’s dynamic, and we expect that Chandler will remain true to the character’s comic book roots.

Known for his commanding screen presence and those piercing, dreamy eyes, Aaron Pierre will star as the new trainee Lantern John Stewart in Lanterns. A former Marine who becomes one of Earth’s most formidable Green Lanterns, Stewart is a fan favorite thanks to his intelligence and unshakable moral code. A grounded character with unwavering determination, so it would be interesting to see how the dynamics will play out between him and Jordan.
Meanwhile, Pierre has a history of playing intense and layered characters, which makes him the perfect choice to play the young prodigy. Given how Stewart comes across as both a fierce warrior and a master strategist, Pierre’s previous roles suggest he can effortlessly convey the many layers of his Green Lantern character while also keeping his portrayal grounded and relatable.

Kelly Macdonald, famous for her role of Helena Ravenclaw in the Harry Potter franchise, will be portraying Kerry, a dedicated sheriff who prioritizes her family as well as the well-being of her small, close-knit town. Known for her nuanced performances across different genres, movies, and series, Macdonald is sure a worthy addition to Lanterns. As a law enforcer navigating the world that is soon to be overturned by unexplainable and mysterious things, Kerry might end up being an unexpected ally of the Green Lanterns as they continue their investigation.

Starring as a recurring character, Garret Dillahunt‘s William Macon is a modern cowboy who conceals his self-righteous, conspiracy-driven mind behind the facade of his charming exterior. Known for his penchant for playing morally ambiguous characters, Dillahunt is a perfect fit for Macon, whether he ends up being an ally, antagonist, something in between for our two Green Lanterns. But whatever it might be, there is no denying that it sure will be a captivating performance from Dillahunt, blending charisma and intensity with a touch of unpredictability.

After decades of a range of roles across different mediums and genres, Never Have I Ever famed Poorna Jagannathan takes on the role of Zoe, a powerful woman who operates in a world dominated by men. Cunning, composed, and strategic, Zoe seems to be a force to be reckoned with. While we will have to wait for the series to know whether Zoe is a welcome presence for the Lanterns or not, there is no denying that Jagannathan’s past roles stand as a testament that she can play sharp, commanding, and intense characters with ease.

The Danish actor and filmmaker Ulrich Thomsen is taking the role of the sinister Thaal Sinestro, a former Green Lantern Corp member who goes rogue and turns into a ruthless adversary. Once one of the most celebrated members of the Corps, his fall from grace makes him one of the most compelling antagonists in the DC comics. Given Thomsen’s experience in portraying dark and grey characters, we can expect his portrayal of Sinestro to be a formidable presence in Lanterns.
