Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on the night of Friday, May 16, 2025, had an interview with online TV, Obinna Show Live, where he made several allegations.
During the interview, Gachagua dramatically altered his earlier position on the state of the country’s finances at the time of transition in 2022, stepping back from his previous rhetoric that the Kenya Kwanza administration inherited completely empty coffers.
He asserted that while the government’s finances were indeed strained, there were still some funds in place to facilitate the smooth running of state affairs.
“To a certain extent, yes, we found empty coffers, but there was enough to get the country started. There was not a surplus or abundance, but there was enough money to get the country back on its feet,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua also said he still has photos of himself with President William Ruto in his house.
He noted that he had decided to keep the photos, despite having bitterly fallen out with the head of state, leading to his impeachment.
These claims, among many others made during the interview, are expected to continue attracting mixed reactions.
People across the world are set to mark World Hypertension Day (WHD). The WHD is a day designated and initiated by the World Hypertension League, which is itself an umbrella to organisations of 85 national hypertension societies and leagues. The day was initiated to increase the awareness of hypertension.
The theme of this year’s event is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer!”
“We invite you to join us in our 20th anniversary celebration of World Hypertension Day for global hypertension awareness on May 17, 2025, with the theme, “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer!”
“WHD promotes increased awareness of high blood pressure and accuracy in blood pressure measurement, especially in low- to middle-income areas. To help achieve this, WHL members and partners are encouraged to participate in WHD via blood pressure screenings, calls to action, community events, media releases, and awareness campaigns worldwide. BP screenings and education on lifestyle modification and dietary salt reduction help reduce the risk for stroke, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease in communities worldwide,” the World Hypertension League said in a statement shared via their official website.
Narok County marked World Hypertension Day at ODM market, Narok Town Ward, on Friday, May 16, 2025.
“The County Department of Health has today conducted a wellness check exercise at ODM Market ahead of this year’s World Hypertension Day that will be commemorated globally tomorrow. The screening focused on five critical health indicators—blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, weight, and height—which are critical in determining an individual’s risk of developing heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes,” a statement shared via the county’s social media accounts read.

Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya is being detained at Central Police Station in Nairobi County, with his arrest and detention expected to continue drawing mixed reactions.

Salasya was arrested on Friday, May 16, at the Isiolo-Nanyuki Road after addressing a rally in Isiolo.
“I have been arrested on my way from the Isiolo-Nanyuki Road. I was attacked by unknown individuals claiming to be DCI officers. These people, heavily armed and moving with force, ambushed my convoy, disarmed my security team, confiscating their firearms, and pursued my vehicle,” he stated.
Addressing the press, Salasya’s lawyer, Ian Mutiso, said the people who arrested the legislator were covered and heavily armed.
“He is facing a charge of false publication and matters of hate speech,” Mutiso told journalists.
