Massive NBA expansion update will soon change the landscape of the league

With the NBA Finals in full swing, NBA commissioner Adam Silver was just interviewed about the state of the league. He had plenty of interesting things to say about the direction of the NBA, including potential expansion.

While the league is widely expected to announce expansion teams in Las Vegas and Seattle, Silver pumped the brakes on expansion being inevitable. Instead, he mentioned that the league will discuss the matter this summer and that other markets are being considered as well.

Interestingly, Silver pointed to Canada and Mexico as being potential landing spots for expansion teams in hopes of expanding the NBA's reach. The league, of course, already has the Toronto Raptors and previously had a team in Vancouver, but they moved to Memphis after just three seasons.

Putting another team in Canada now would likely work out much better, with basketball rapidly growing there. Additionally, Mexico has become an increasingly viable market for the NBA. Especially Mexico City, which is the largest city in North America.

The NBA has been playing games in Mexico City for years, and they seem to have a decent foothold in the region. Putting a team there and having the league's top stars play in Mexico City would bring in a potentially large segment of untapped customers. That could be better for the long-term growth of the NBA.

Then again, another team in Canada would be reasonable considering how popular the Raptors have become north of the border. Putting a team in Montreal, which is hundreds of miles from Toronto, would allow them to make inroads in another part of Canada and bring in more revenue.

Of course, Seattle and Las Vegas still appear to be the odds-on favorites to land expansion teams. Seattle proved that they could support a franchise and did so for 41 years before the SuperSonics were stolen away by Oklahoma City.

Seattle is also home to several of the world's largest companies, including Microsoft, Starbucks, and Amazon, potentially bringing in hundreds of millions in advertising opportunities to the league.

As for Las Vegas, the NBA has long had ties with the city, with Summer League being played there as well as the in-season tournament finale. Add in sports gambling, and Las Vegas makes plenty of sense as well.

Obviously, Silver isn't going to tip his hand when the NBA has yet to have formal discussions on the subject, but if and when expansion happens, expect those two cities to be announced.

All told, the NBA appears to be taking the first steps towards expansion this summer. While a lot still needs to be ironed out, it doesn't appear to be a foregone conclusion that Las Vegas and Seattle will both be getting expansion teams. Instead, another team in Canada or even a team in Mexico City could be on the table, with the NBA looking to expand its reach.
