Mark, Amaechi, other opposition leaders form new political party

Published 13 hours ago2 minute read

In what is shaping up to be one of the most consequential political realignments since 2015, several senior figures from Nigeria’s ruling and main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have taken bold steps towards forming a new political party, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

The move is being led by prominent PDP stalwarts, including former Senate President, David Mark, who chairs the National Opposition Coalition Group (NOCG), a gathering of disenchanted political heavyweights from the PDP and other opposition blocs.

Their decision signals mounting dissatisfaction within the PDP and a search for a fresh political vehicle to challenge the ruling party in 2027.

Following a series of high-level consultations, the NOCG constituted a 15-member New Platform Committee, which met on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in Abuja and formally approved the establishment of ADA .

The committee’s resolutions included the approval of the party’s name, constitution, manifesto, logo, and the appointment of an interim leadership team to guide the party through its formative phase.

Chief Akin A. Ricketts was named Protem Chairman of ADA, while Abdullahi Musa Elayo will serve as Protem National Secretary.

The committee, chaired by former Transport Minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, also tasked the interim leadership with securing office space, pursuing registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and preparing the party for full political operations under the Electoral Act of 2022.

According to a communiqué signed by the committee’s chairman, Amaechi, and secretary, Dr. Umar Ardo, the committee resolved to officially convert the platform into a political association under the name ADA and apply for registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Political observers see the formation of ADA as a strategic move by the opposition to consolidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources close to the initiative suggest that internal disillusionment within the PDP, leadership tussles, and perceived inability to present a credible national alternative prompted the decision to chart a new course.

ADA, according to insiders, aims to reposition the opposition with a focus on inclusive governance, national unity, and democratic accountability.

Observers believe the involvement of respected figures like Mark, Amaechi, and others would add significant weight to the new movement, potentially attracting further defections from the PDP and smaller opposition parties in the coming months.
