2014's Godzilla from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. was the second attempt at bringing the beloved franchise to life via North American studios since TriStar Pictures' 1998 reboot, which was instantly recognized as a low point for Godzilla as a whole. Directed by Gareth Edwards from a script by Max Borenstein, the 2014 reboot introduced a far more recognizable breed of Godzilla, one who quickly established himself as King of the Monsters after numerous confrontations with both military forces and various other Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms, or MUTOs. The film featured an ensemble cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Straithairn, and Sally Hawkins, with acclaimed stuntman T.J. Storm providing the motion-capture performance for Godzilla..
Godzilla crushed the box office during its original theatrical run, bringing in over $529 million at the box office on a budget of only $160 million. This not only cemented the production of a sequel, but established the basis for Legendary Pictures' entire MonsterVerse, which currently consists of five feature films, one animated series in the form of 2023's Skull Island, and one live-action series in the form of the ongoing Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Currently, fans are awaiting the release of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' hotly-anticipated second season, which is expected to arrive some time this year.

The latest feature film entry in the MonsterVerse, 2024's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, dominated the box office during its theatrical run with more than $571 million in ticket sales. This made the film the highest grossing MonsterVerse movie to date, with over $373.7 million of its total returns being garnered outside of North America. Shortly after the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, director Adam Wingard opened up about his vision for the future of the franchise, noting, "I definitely have some ideas of where they could go. In the way that Kong is treated in this movie, if this movie is successful, I think that the next movie will be the Godzilla version of what we did with this movie, kind of pushing deeper into his story."
Godzilla will be available for streaming entirely for free on Tubi beginning March 1.
