Many approved GPL venues don't match rejected UG Stadium - Hearts PRO Opare Addo
Accra Hearts of Oak’s Public Relations Officer, Opare Addo, has criticized the Club Licensing Board’s decision to reject the University of Ghana Stadium as a Ghana Premier League (GPL) venue, arguing that many approved pitches do not match its standards.
The UG Stadium, which has served as a temporary home for Hearts of Oak, Legon Cities, and Accra Lions, was deemed unfit due to the lack of a designated safe zone. However, Addo believes the decision lacks consistency and fairness.
Speaking on Happy FM, he questioned the rationale behind the rejection:
“If the Legon pitch isn’t good enough, how many pitches in Ghana have the features the UG Stadium offers? Yet, we play matches across the country on fields with even fewer amenities. I don’t want to single out any venue out of respect, but if Legon doesn’t meet the standards, then there are GPL venues that don’t even meet half of what Legon has. Let’s embrace fairness.”
The Baba Yara Stadium, Berekum Chelsea’s Golden City Park, Basake Holy Stars’ AAK Ampanian Stadium in Nzema, and Young Apostles’ Wenchi Sports Stadium have also been ruled unfit by the Club Licensing Board.
Addo’s comments add to the growing debate over stadium approvals, with clubs now under pressure to meet the required standards ahead of the GPL’s return.
