Mansfield child dies after being left in hot car 'for what appeared to be several hours'
A Mansfield child died Thursday after being left in a hot vehicle for what appeared to be several hours, according to Mansfield police chief Jason Bammann.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A Mansfield child died Thursday after being left in a hot vehicle for what appeared to be several hours, according to Mansfield police chief Jason Bammann.
Bammann said the vehicle was parked at an assisted living residence in the first block of Wood Street. Police and EMS officials were called around 3:15 p.m.
No information was immediately available about the child's identity. Bammann said he was told the child was five years old, but added he wasn't able to confirm that yet.
Bammann said it was a difficult day for his department.
"As you can imagine any case involving a young child like this can be hard on everyone and today's incident is no different," he said. "I am very thankful for the professionalism that my officers, detectives, dispatchers, and firefighters showed during this incident."
"My heart is also heavy for the family of this young boy." Bammann said. "What a horrible tragedy this is. I'm at a loss for words."
He added the incident is under investigation by police detectives, who are working with the Richland County Prosecutor's Office. No other information was immediately available about the incident.
