Matheus Cunha’s signing started the week off incredibly well, and it got much better for those in red after the news that Bryan Mbeumo had chosen Manchester United over any of the other clubs interested in his signature
Those two players, who scored 35 goals between them last season in the Premier League, already add some much-needed goals to the starting eleven, but the club are on the hunt for one more after being turned down by Liam Delap last week.
United have been linked with a host of names across the last few weeks for the front line, with United having to adjust their plans following Delap’s rejection.
Despite bringing in Cunha and Mbeumo, with the current first-choice striker Rasmus Højlund reportedly of interest to Inter Milan, United are still pressing ahead to secure a new centre-forward this summer.
United have reportedly made contact with Victor Gyökeres, who, according to Fabrizio Romano, has been described as the club’s dream striker target and has been a goal machine for Sporting in the last two seasons, netting 97 times in 102 appearances.
This comes after Ben Jacobs revealed that one of United’s other striker targets, Victor Osimhen, had received a contract offer from Al-Hilal worth over £450,000 a week – something United will be unable to match.
— Ben Jacobs (@JacobsBen) June 4, 2025Understand Al-Hilal have now made a formal offer to Victor Osimhen worth around €30m-per-season with bonuses on top.
As revealed in April, Osimhen a key target ahead of the Club World Cup. One to watch in the next few days.🇳🇬 pic.twitter.com/wlIkD7ZHqN
Gyökeres, who has yet to make a decision on his future, has now received contact from the side from the Theatre of Dreams, according to a report from GiveMeSport.
The report states that United have made contact with the player to gauge whether his signature could be feasible. Gyökeres has been previously reported to prefer a side in the Champions League, but his relationship with Amorim could swing the pendulum.
United are closing in on the signing of Mbeumo with club-to-club talks underway, but a striker has always been something they have craved. Højlund’s performances have caused the position to become a priority.
Gyökeres would be allowed to leave Sporting if an important fee came in of around £60m total package. Arsenal have also been monitoring the player.
If United sign a pure goal scorer like Gyökeres and land Bryan Mbeumo, the window would be a top midfielder away from being a ten out of ten. Gyökeres adds automatic goals to a team that desperately craves them.
A signing like Amadou Onana to cover large spaces beside a Kobbie Mainoo or Bruno Fernandes takes United to new heights, but a signature like that will be difficult without sales.
Gyökeres is possible, but funds will need to be made available after Cunha and Mbeumo, with Brentford reportedly looking for close to £60 million for the Cameroon international.
Positive signs for United, but deals need to start getting over the line before excitement levels get too high.
