Mai Yamamoto scores in WNBA-Japan crossover

In their final preseason game, the Dallas Wings faced Japan's Toyota Antelopes, creating a special moment for Wings guard Mai Yamamoto. Yamamoto, a Japanese native, had the opportunity to play against her former team, the Antelopes, and scored a three-pointer in the fourth quarter. This occurred while her teammate, Maddy Siegrist, was being interviewed and paused the interview to cheer for Yamamoto.

Yamamoto joined the Wings in February after playing for the Antelopes last season, where she averaged 11.7 points per game. She also represented Japan in the 2024 Paris Olympics in three-on-three basketball. However, her spot on the final roster is not guaranteed, as she is competing with other bench players and could be cut before the May 15th deadline.

The Wings demonstrated readiness for the regular season with a dominant 65-point victory against the Antelopes. Both veteran stars like Arike Ogunbowale, who scored 17 points with four three-pointers, and new players significantly contributed to the win. Rookie Paige Bueckers impressed with 15 points, five rebounds, six assists, and one block in 23 minutes, showcasing her passing and driving abilities. Myisha Hines-Allen, NaLyssa Smith, and DiJonai Carrington also provided solid performances.

After finishing the 2024 season with only nine wins, the Wings appear poised to compete for a playoff spot in the upcoming season, thanks to the contributions of both returning stars and promising new additions.
