Mahashivratri Stock Market Holiday: BSE, NSE, and money market closed on February 26; here's what else is unavailable
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed on Monday, February 26, in observance of Mahashivratri. Trading across all segments, including equities, derivatives, security lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and interest rate derivatives, will remain shut for the day.
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also remain closed for trading in the morning session from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm but will resume operations in the evening session from 5:30 pm to 11:30/11:55 pm. The money market, including trading in government securities (G-Secs), bonds, and forex markets, will also remain closed for the day.
Several banks across multiple cities will be closed on February 26, following the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar. However, online banking services such as net banking, UPI transactions, and mobile banking will remain operational, ensuring uninterrupted digital transactions.

Ahead of the holiday, benchmark indices closed flat in a volatile trading session on February 25. The Nifty 50 closed six points lower at 22,547.55, while the BSE Sensex ended 147.71 points or 0.20 per cent higher at 74,602.12. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices fell 0.5 per cent each, extending their recent losses.
Among the top Nifty gainers were Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Maruti Suzuki, and Nestle, while Hindalco, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Sun Pharma, Hero MotoCorp, and Trent were the major laggards. Notably, Nifty 50 has now closed lower for the sixth consecutive session.
Mahashivratri marks the first stock market holiday of the year. In total, 18 market holidays have been scheduled for 2025. The next trading holiday will be on March 14 for Holi, followed by another on March 31 for Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramzan Id).
April will have four market holidays:
- April 1: Annual Bank Closing
- April 10: Shri Mahavir Jayanti
- April 14: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti
- April 18: Good Friday (Ramzan Id)
In May, there will be two holidays: May 1 for Maharashtra Day and May 12 for Buddha Purnima. Notably, there will be no stock market holidays in June and July. Trading on the NSE and BSE will resume on Tuesday, February 27, following the holiday break.
