Mahama must stick to 60-minister limit, No need for an increase - Bongo MP
Charles Adongo Bawaduah, Member of Parliament for Bongo, has defended President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to appoint 60 ministers, rejecting calls from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for the president to apologize and increase the number of ministers.
Speaking on on Saturday, January 25, on Channel One TV, he emphasized that the president is working within a well-thought-out plan to deliver on his manifesto promises.
“I think the president has a plan, and he is working according to that plan. Constitutionally, he is not constrained to limit the number of ministers, but he knows the strategies he needs to deliver the promises made to the people who voted him into power.”
He addressed concerns about the number of ministers, comparing it to past administrations. “People recall instances where we had so many ministers, but that came with a cost draining national resources with numerous vehicles and high operational costs. The economy is struggling, and the president is trying to maximize the use of available resources with his decision to stick to 60 ministers,” he explained.
The MP also highlighted the balance between political expectations and economic realities. “I understand that people campaign hard for the party and expect ministerial positions, and supporters see ministerial appointments as a way to benefit. But the key thing is that the economy needs to be strong for everything else to function.”
He firmly rejected the idea that John Mahama should apologize or increase the number of ministers, adding, “The president hasn’t even fully worked with the 60 ministers he promised, so there’s no basis for him to feel compelled to increase the number.
He should be allowed to finish his appointments and work toward fulfilling his manifesto promises. Let him work with the 60 ministers he has.”
