Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Strikes Off Northern Coast Of Chile

The quake occurred at a depth of 104 km (64.62 miles).

A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 hit off the coast of Northern Chile on Friday, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).

The quake occurred at a depth of 104 km (64.62 miles).

"This seismic activity is a reminder of the region's vulnerability to earthquakes," experts warn. The recent quake follows a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern coastal regions of Chile and Argentina last month.

The previous quake, centered near Cape Horn close to Antarctica, occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) and triggered several aftershocks.

"The quake led Chilean authorities to issue a tsunami warning for the country's southernmost areas," reports AFP.

As the region continues to experience seismic activity, residents remain on high alert, aware of the potential for further earthquakes and tsunamis.
