M3GAN Spin-off Movie SOULM8TE Is 'Fatal Attraction But With Robots'
The M3GAN movies have shown us the dark side of artificial intelligence. Our introduction to the humanoid robot doll proved that hostility can come when a robot is self-aware. Its sequel reprograms that same robot to go against a military robot attempting an AI takeover. Its M3GAN spin-off movie SOULM8TE teases its concept as “Fatal Attraction but with robots.”
The first M3GAN movie ended up being a huge success, making $181 million on a budget of $12 million. Not to mention, the robot doll’s trendy dance moves from the movie made M3GAN a hit on social media.
After seeing the success of the sci-fi horror flick, Universal made sure to plan a sequel with M3GAN 2.0. Based on the trailer, the following flick seems to be a mix of I, Robot and Terminator 2 of turning the previous villain into the hero in order to prevent artificial intelligence from taking over.
After M3GAN 2.0 hits theaters on June 27th, humanoid robots still plan to make an appearance on the big screen. While earlier films targeted younger audiences, director James Wan told EW how its spin-off SOULM8TE will be more R-rated:
“M3GAN, obviously, dabbles in the PG-13 world, the younger demographic. We always felt like there might be a more adult story to tell, and that’s really what SOULM8TE is.”
M3GAN and its 2.0 follow-up may make our pulses race with laughs thrown in. But, James Wan revealed that SOULM8TE will delve into the erotic thriller genre, similar to a well-known Glenn Close classic:
“SOULM8TE is basically set in the same AI world but seen through a more grown-up perspective, one that embraces all the great erotic thrillers from the ’90s. It’s like Fatal Attraction but with robots.”
Filmed in New Zealand, SOULM8TE follows a man using an AI android to cope with the loss of his wife. But what begins as a love story turns into a deadly romance.
M3GAN star and SOULM8TE executive producer, Allison Williams, explained that there are already companion-type sex bots in other parts of the world. So, she and James Wan thought of the idea of putting that technology in the form of a female humanoid whose purpose is to pleasure a person.
Despite SOULM8TE being more adult, James Wan also said the spin-off will still have the previous movies’ “darkest sense of humor” without trying to “replicate that sassiness” of the other films. Be prepared for a new type of robot with the new release date of SOULM8TE hitting theaters on January 9th.
