Los Angeles Lakers Urged To Push LeBron Out If They Want NBA Championship, 'He's Not Getting A 5th Ring'

As the Los Angeles Lakers’ offseason looms, so does one of the most anticipated decisions in basketball: Will LeBron James return for a 22nd season?

The 40-year-old Lakers superstar has yet to announce whether he’ll opt into his $52.6 million player option for 2025-26. He’s publicly stated he’ll take his time to weigh the pros and cons—a decision that could either extend a legendary career or bring it to a close with one last All-Star appearance in Los Angeles, potentially a “storybook” finale, as NBA insider Shams Charania hinted.

Despite a first-round playoff exit to the Timberwolves, LeBron was far from the problem. He averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds on 51.3% shooting and continued to manipulate defenses with his elite IQ and power. The Lakers, who brought in Luka Dončić midseason, remain in win-now mode. With the right offseason moves—particularly at center—there’s still a path to contention.

Yet, not everyone believes James should keep going.

Former NBA center Olden Polynice, speaking on Byron Scott’s Fast Break podcast, questioned LeBron’s continued chase for longevity:

“It’s time to start thinking about retiring… he’s not getting a fifth ring unless he buys one.”

Polynice, who played against legends like Jordan and Kobe, also ranked LeBron third behind those two, citing their “killer instinct” as the difference. Others, like LeBron’s former coach Michael Malone, have echoed similar sentiments.

Still, the idea that James should step away ignores the unprecedented nature of his career. While the explosive finishes may not be as frequent, LeBron remains one of the most impactful players in the league—and he’s already achieved a major personal goal by sharing the court with his son Bronny, drafted by the Lakers in 2024. Should younger son Bryce make the NBA in 2026, it could set up another historic milestone.

So, is the final chapter already written, or is there one more left to tell?

Critics like Polynice may doubt him. But history suggests betting against LeBron James is a mistake. And if he does add a fifth ring to his résumé, a few podcasts might need some editing.
