Over 52 non-formal education centres have been established in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State to support out-of-school children and divorced women under the Accelerated Basic Education Centres (ABEC) initiative supported by UNICEF.
UNICEF focal person, Mr. Godwin Kure Lucky, said the centres are tailored to provide quality learning opportunities to children without access to formal schooling, including married and divorced young women.
Facilitator Mrs. Shelena Daniels added that the 9-month accelerated programme enables learners to catch up with formal education standards and transition into adult learning.
UNICEF Education Specialist, Mr. Abdulrahman Ibrahim, said the initiative bridges the gap between formal and non-formal education, enabling learners to progress like their peers in conventional schools.
The state’s Commissioner for Education, Dr. Umar Pella, represented by Hajiya Aisha Mohammed Umar, commended UNICEF and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) for their contributions to improving child education and infrastructure development.
