LaMelo Ball injury update: Charlotte Hornets star to undergo multiple surgeries, miss rest of season
Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball is out for the remainder of the season. On Friday, ESPN’s Shams Charania provided further details on Ball’s condition.
“LaMelo Ball will miss the rest of the season as he undergoes two minor procedures to address ankle and wrist issues, sources tell ESPN,” Charania wrote on X. “Ball showed toughness, playing through pain in recent weeks, before he and team consulted doctors on best course forward.”
“Team doctors and outside specialists concluded that the two procedures will allow Ball to heal and have a full offseason,” Charania added in a subsequent tweet. “The decision ends Ball’s career year in scoring. He is the first player in Hornets history to average 25 points and 7 assists in a season, per ESPN research.”
Ball was averaging 25.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game this season while shooting 40.5% from the field and 33.9% from beyond the arc. His 25.2 points per outing this season were a career-high.
Unfortunately, Ball isn’t a stranger to injuries. Ball hasn’t played more than 50 games in a season since the 2021-22 campaign.
Despite Ball’s standout play this season, the Hornets are currently 18-54, the third-worst record in the NBA. On a positive note, the team boasts plenty of draft capital and a young roster with room to grow.
The Memphis Grizzlies announced Friday they have fired head coach Taylor Jenkins after six seasons. Jenkins’ dismissal comes with nine games remaining in the NBA regular season and the Grizzlies (44-29) occupying the fifth seed in the Western Conference.
Jenkins was called into the office Friday morning and fired in-person, per Shams Charania of ESPN. The Grizzlies have yet to announce an interim head coach.
“I’m genuinely appreciative of Taylor’s contributions to this team and this city over the past six seasons,” Grizzlies president and general manager of basketball operations Zach Kleiman said. “This was a difficult decision, given the consistent and tangible development of our players and overall success under Taylor’s leadership. I wish Taylor the very best going forward.”
Jenkins, 40, took over as head coach ahead of the 2019-20 season. Previously an assistant for the Milwaukee Bucks, Jenkins led the Grizzlies back to the playoffs in his second season at the helm. Memphis made two more trips to the postseason under Jenkins, going as far as the second round in 2021-22.
The Grizzlies have struggled since the All-Star break. Memphis went into the break 36-18, holding the No. 2 seed. The team has since gone 8-11 and fell 124-105 to the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder Thursday night. Memphis was outscored 34-15 in the fourth quarter.
