The Lagos State Government has announced the arrival of three new train sets — comprising a total of 12 coaches — for the state’s Blue Line rail, marking another milestone in its efforts to enhance public transport.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu shared the update via his official X account, noting that the delivery will improve commuting conditions across the city.

“We have taken delivery of three brand-new train sets of 12 coaches in total for the Lagos Blue Line Rail,” the governor wrote. “It’s a step forward in our efforts to make daily commute in Lagos less stressful and more reliable.”

The governor added that the additional coaches would significantly reduce waiting times and offer more comfortable journeys for passengers.

Sanwo-Olu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the next phase of the project, which involves extending the Blue Line to Okokomaiko.

“We’re not stopping here. Work is ongoing to extend the Blue Line all the way to Okokomaiko, and we’re aiming to finish that by 2026,” he said.

He praised Lagos residents for their continued patience and trust in the state’s urban mobility projects.

“The long-awaited project is finally taking shape and will transform the city’s mobility for the better,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “We appreciate our citizens for their patience and hope.”

The Lagos Blue Line began commercial operations on 4 September 2023, initially running 12 trips daily. On 11 October 2023, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced a temporary suspension of services from 14 October to allow for operational adjustments. The service resumed shortly thereafter, with daily trips increasing to 54.

In January, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) revealed plans to partner with the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group to develop an additional rail line, as part of broader efforts to expand the state’s rail infrastructure.
