Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Taskforce carried out a midnight enforcement operation on Friday, arresting 62 individuals across strategic locations on Lagos Island.
The coordinated crackdown, which began at approximately 1:30 am, targeted areas identified as emerging crime hubs, including Victoria Island, Falomo, the Eko Hotel axis, Osborne, and adjoining streets.
According to officials, these zones have witnessed a spike in illegal occupation and criminal behavior, prompting urgent intervention.
The Lagos State Government described the operation as part of an intensified campaign to sanitize the metropolis and address security concerns linked to the activities of what it referred to as “undesirable elements”.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the enforcement effort and subsequent arrests via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“In continuation of the agency’s clean-up enforcement operation to rid the State of criminal elements, operatives of the Environmental Taskforce team set out at about 0130hrs on Friday, 23rd May 2025 and embarked on its ongoing clean-up enforcement operation on the Island,” Wahab wrote.
He further disclosed that a total of 62 suspects, comprising 59 males and 3 females, were apprehended during the sweep, adding that the enforcement action helped restore order to all affected areas.
“The areas visited during the operation include Victoria Island, Falomo, Eko Hotel, Osborne and other adjoining streets where the presence of some undesirable elements was noticed,” Wahab noted. “Sanity was restored in all the areas.”
The Commissioner assured that the arrested individuals would face prosecution in accordance with the law.
“All the suspects will be charged to court accordingly,” he said.
