Lagos shuts beaches, halts work on 180 properties over land encroachment

The Lagos State Government has sealed off two popular beachfront establishments, Timeless Beach and Iceland Beach, along with issuing stop-work orders to 180 buildings in the Okun-Ajah area of Eti-Osa over allegations of illegal occupation of state-owned land.

The enforcement action, led by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Hon. Dayo Bush Alebiosu, followed what authorities described as a prolonged period of non-compliance with official summons and contravention notices served to the affected property owners.

According to Alebiosu, repeated attempts to resolve the matter through dialogue were ignored by the occupants. “We have tried engaging these individuals through official channels, but they’ve consistently chosen to flout the law,” he said. He added that the government cannot condone what he described as deliberate disregard for due process and land ownership regulations.

While some property owners who had previously received contravention notices were later issued E-Survey documents after fulfilling legal requirements, Alebiosu said a number of others continued with construction in defiance of government directives.

The Commissioner confirmed that over 20 individuals were arrested during the operation and would be prosecuted in accordance with state laws. He reiterated the government’s resolve to protect waterfront areas and state land from unlawful development.

Officials from the Ministry noted that the crackdown is part of broader efforts to ensure order, compliance, and sustainable development along Lagos’s coastal zones.
