Kylian Mbappe Reacts to PSG Winning Champions League Without Him

Kylian Mbappe expressed his happiness for his former club, Paris St Germain, after they secured their first-ever Champions League title this season, despite his departure to Real Madrid approximately a year prior. PSG achieved this historic milestone by defeating Inter Milan 5-0 in the final on May 31st. Mbappe, who watched his former teammates lift the coveted trophy, acknowledged their hard-earned success.

Mbappe lauded PSG's performance, calling them "the best team in Europe" and stating their victory was "100% deserved" after enduring numerous challenges over the years. He remarked on the decisiveness of their win, noting, "I can't remember ever seeing them go 5-0 up. It's 100% deserved, they're becoming the team everyone wants to beat."

Reflecting on his own seven seasons with the Parisian club, where he became their all-time top scorer with 256 goals, Mbappe mentioned experiencing every stage of the Champions League except for winning it. His closest attempt was the 2020 final, which PSG lost to Bayern Munich. He commented, "I've been through that too. I've been through every stage of the Champions League except winning it... it was destiny that meant it had to happen without me."

Regarding his exit from PSG on a free transfer, the 26-year-old French captain insisted that his "story was over" with the club and that he had "reached the end of my tether," feeling no personal bitterness about their subsequent triumph. However, his departure was reportedly not without complications, as Mbappe took PSG to court over approximately 55 million euros in alleged unpaid wages, suggesting some acrimony in the separation process.

In his first season at Real Madrid, Mbappe achieved individual success, scoring 43 goals across all competitions, including 31 in LaLiga which earned him the European Golden Shoe. Despite his personal achievements, Real Madrid finished the season without any major trophies, ending as runners-up in both LaLiga and the Copa del Rey, and were eliminated from the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Arsenal. This marked Real Madrid's first trophyless campaign in four years.

Mbappe reiterated that PSG winning the Champions League without him "doesn't affect me" and dismissed any notion that he might have left the French club "too soon." He emphasized his resilience, stating, "I think we all face challenges in our careers... I've always liked being in these positions, it's up to me to work. I've reversed quite a few trends in my career, I've had a lot of things stuck on my back and I've managed to get them off."

When questioned about the Ballon d'Or, Mbappe endorsed his former PSG teammate Ousmane Dembele for the prestigious award over Barcelona's Lamine Yamal. He cited Dembele's impressive season, in which he scored 33 goals and provided 15 assists, contributing to PSG's domestic treble of the Ligue 1 title, the French Cup, and implicitly, their Champions League success as part of an outstanding year.
