The lawmakers criticised the conduct of Kenyans following the detention and deportation of Kenyan politician Martha Karua in Tanzania, where she had travelled to observe the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
In their remarks, Tanzanian MPs painted Kenyan citizens as having a low mental capacity, depicting Kenya as a chaotic and poorly governed country lagging behind Tanzania in terms of development and discipline.
They asserted that Tanzania had nothing to learn from its neighbour and accused Kenyan youth of being ill-mannered and disrespectful.
The MPs contrasted this behaviour with what they described as the disciplined and composed nature of Tanzanian youth.
They claimed Kenyan youth spend excessive time on social media, engaging in insults and fueling online toxicity, particularly by roasting President Samia Suluhu Hassan in digital spaces.
Shortly after these speeches, Kenyan keyboard warriors launched a digital counterattack.
Kenyan netizens leaked private phone numbers of several outspoken Tanzanian MPs on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Tanzanian MPs' phone numbers leaked and Kenyan online activists sent them offensive messages, in an infamous act known as 'sending greetings'.
spotted screenshots of exchanges between the keyboard warriors and some Tanzanian lawmakers.
Some Tanzanian lawmakers whose phone numbers leaked include Jesca Msambatavangu (Iringa MP), Joseph Msukuma (Geita MP), and Emmanuel Kingu (Singida MP).
Even President Samia Suluhu was targeted, with some sharing a phone number they claimed was hers.
