Political commentator Kwaku Osei Korankye Asiedu, popularly known as KOKA, has stirred public discussion after questioning the reported cost of Ghana’s recently held National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, allegedly staged at a cost of between GHC 1 million and GHC 1.5 million.

Speaking on Movement TV, KOKA expressed shock at the expenditure, especially for an event he described as “supposedly solemn and spiritual.” He questioned the rationale behind spending such a significant amount on a prayer event, urging government officials to justify the budget to the Ghanaian public.

“They said it was a solemn reflection, but why didn’t they use the forecourt of the Jubilee House?” KOKA asked, suggesting that using an existing government facility would have significantly reduced costs.

He claimed that event organisers had circulated details of the alleged expenditure in various WhatsApp groups, with figures ranging from GHC 1 million to GHC 1.5 million. While the government has yet to officially confirm or deny the figures, KOKA’s comments have triggered debates on social media and among civil society groups about government spending and prioritisation.

Critics argue that in the midst of economic challenges, high youth unemployment, and rising cost of living, such an amount on a one-day religious event raises questions about value for money.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, held on July 1, was organised by the Mahama-led administration to promote unity, national reflection, and gratitude. However, the controversy surrounding its cost may overshadow its intended message.

Government spokespersons are yet to respond to KOKA’s claims.
