Ken Agyapong trends after US Court slaps him with $18 million defamation penalty to Anas
The former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, is currently trending across multiple social media platforms, especially on X, following his recent legal defeat.
Netizens have expressed mixed reactions to the MP’s loss in a defamation suit filed against him by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
A social media user wrote, “Sources from New Jersey in the United States reveal that Anas Aremeyaw Anas has won a defamation case against Kennedy Agyapong. Kennedy Agyapong has been slapped with $18 million in damages. He appealed for a reduction but failed.”
Another user commented, “The only person that can save Kennedy Agyapong from bankruptcy. $18 million is no joke.”
“All that talk, yet he couldn’t give Anas a showdown. At this point, we need an E-levy to pay Kennedy Agyapong’s $18 million debt.”
Others also mocked the MP’s financial predicament, “Now, Kennedy Agyapong owes more than Barcelona. Anas is eating good.”
“Kennedy Agyapong was always quick to insult judges in Ghana but went mute in a US court… Your power has limits, oo.”
The Essex County jury has awarded Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18 million in his defamation suit against former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.
It will be recalled that in January 2023, an Accra High Court presided over by Justice Eric Baah dismissed Anas' defamation suit against Ken Agyapong.
The court ruled that although the words spoken against Anas were factual and capable of being defamatory, he could not prove his case.
Anas had prayed the High Court to award aggravated damages to the tune of GH¢25 million, arising from defamatory materials published by the MP.
The MP had published materials in an attempt to discredit the investigative journalist, who had released a report on corruption.
Unhappy with the MP’s actions, Anas, through his lawyer, sued Ken Agyapong for general damages for defamation based on the defendant’s publications.
On May 29, 2018, during a live program in Twi on Adom TV, Ken Agyapong categorically stated that Anas was a blackmailer, corrupt, an extortionist, and evil.
