KATH has refuted reports suggesting that a young doctor at the facility caused a patient’s paralysis

The management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has refuted media reports suggesting that a young doctor at the facility caused a man to become paralysed following a medical procedure.

In a statement dated June 30, 2025, KATH described the report as misleading.

"Management wishes to state that the allegation is completely unfounded and that the complainant’s current condition was not and could not have been caused by a procedure performed on him at the hospital. The insinuation that an “intern” performed the said procedure during his visit to the hospital is equally false", it noted.

The hospital clarified that medical records reveal the patient’s current state is due to complications from a chronic medical condition he has been living with since birth.

The patient, they explained, requires a hip-replacement surgery, and the need for such has been communicated to him multiple times by experienced specialists.

"From the records, the condition of the said patient is purely the result of a well-recognised complication of a chronic medical condition he has been living with since birth for which he will need a hip-replacement surgery.

"This has already been explained to him in a number of engagements with seasoned specialists under the facilitation of the Complaints Section of the Quality Assurance Unit of the hospital", it noted.

KATH further underscored its commitment to providing the best possible care to all clients but insisted that it will also defend its reputation and that of its staff.

“We will not hesitate to take the appropriate steps in the protection of same in case of unjustified attacks,” the statement added.
