Kasatkina out in first round at Queen's Club-Xinhua
LONDON, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Daria Kasatkina was knocked out of the Queen's Club Championships here on Monday after being beaten by British wild card Sonya Kartal 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the women's singles first round.
Australia's Kasatkina came to the Queen's Club in west London as world No. 16 and was drawn to face the world No. 50 Kartal.
Kartal, 23, started strongly by winning the first set. Although eight-time WTA title winner Kasatkina launched a comeback to take the second set, Kartal took the decider to set up a second-round battle against world No.15 Amanda Anisimova, who came from behind to defeat local player Jodie Burrage 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Earlier, Brazil's Haddad Maia edged out two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, while German veteran Tatjana Maria beat Leylah Fernandez of Canada 7-6(4), 6-2.
China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen is the tournament's top seed. The world No.5 has received a first round bye and will face either Great Britain's Francesca Jones or McCartney Kessler of the United States in the second round. ■
