Kalu's Presidential Ambition: On Hold Until 2031

Published 16 hours ago6 minute read

The Senator representing Abia North at the National Assembly, and Chairman, Senate Committee on Privatisation, Sen. Orji Kalu, has disclosed that his presidential ambition is in the cooler and will be revived again after Tinubu completes his second term in office.

Speaking with newsmen in Igbere in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State on Tuesday, Kalu said the party is supreme, adding that even if he has the ambition to run for the presidency he cannot fight the party which he noted had already had endorsed President Bola Tinubu for another second term that will come to an end in 2031.

The former Abia State governor who expressed confidence that Tinubu will win in 2027 noted that it’s the supremacy of party is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is enjoying.

“I am a member of the APC and our party has comfortably endorsed President Tinubu. So, even if I have Presidential ambition, it is in the cooler for now because I cannot fight the party. The party is supreme. The supremacy of party is what President Tinubu is enjoying.

“He will enjoy it and we will elect him President. At God’s own time, if I still have the energy, and the resources, after President Tinubu in 2031, who says, I can’t contest for the President? It is possible” he said

The Lawmaker also said he would  recontest the Abia North senatorial district seat in 2027 if the people found him worthy to come back

He said, “2027, I will run for re-election for the Senate. I will run if our people find me worthy. A man who has done more than 187 roads in six years as a senator, and I have done more than 123 primary schools”.

Speaking on the performance of President Tinubu in the last two years Kalu said, “I work closely with him. The President has done very well within two years. If we can give him the benefits of finishing another two years and doing another term, I think we will see a lot of changes in the economy”.

The Abia senator said the endorsement of President Tinubu for another second term is not hasty as is being speculated in some quarters  adding that the party did the right thing to encourage to do more

According to him “The party did the right thing because, we are in the mid-term and we need to encourage the President to do more. The sitting President has the right to re-contest and we will support him hundred percent.

He added”President Tinubu himself know that people are suffering.  He is the president. No president whatsoever in the world, want his people to suffer. And no governor also, in anywhere in the world, wants his people to suffer. It is just the same. When people are in possession of leadership, they want to do their best so that they can ameliorate sufferings from the people they govern.

“But what is happening today is that at the top level, the economy is really doing well, but it needs time to trickle down. It takes a couple of years for the economy to get back once it runs into inflation, depression, and all the rest of them.

“So, honestly, it is because we have no formal economy. I am not in the economic team of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but I can assure you that he is working day and night. President Tinubu knows that people are hungry, that they are suffering, but you see a few things he has been able to get back – stabilization of the foreign exchange in the last months. Getting up to 9 months, foreign exchange is stable.

“I believe that in the next one, two, three years, the economic activities will be getting down to the roots where it is supposed to belong.

Senator Kalu’s visit to Abia State governor, Alex Otti has generated controversy among APC supporters in the state

But speaking on the issue, Kalu said, “My visit was a private visit. I didn’t visit because I am an APC member. I am the oldest governor of the state and I have the right to go to Gov. Otti at any time. So, it is not a matter of this or that. The matter is that he is the governor of the state.

“I laid the solid foundation for Abia. It was just that there was a little disconnect and that disconnect made it very impossible for things to continue the way it went and governor Otti came and reconnected it, and that is the truth.

He dismissed the possibility of being sanctioned by the party saying “I am a high-ranking member of the party. To suspend me, to talk about me in the APC, they had to go to the NEC. So if I have gone to Governor Otti, I went there as a private man, and I remain to visit him at any time I want to visit him

Speaking on the unity of APC, Kalu said, “I am APC to the core. When I said I can pull the trigger for the APC. I don’t know what that means to you. People should know that our party is one. APC should be able to work hard to deliver our President and deliver our party. We are committed to it.

According to him on if the APC has the chances of winning election in 2027, he said, “Yes, ofcourse, it is possible if we come together. Why not? We can produce the governor if we work very hard. That is it. Every job is hardworking. If you don’t work hard, you don’t lick an orange. I am a very good party man. I said, I will pull the trigger. When a man tells you he will pull the trigger for his party, it means that I will lay down anything that is right to support my party. That’s what it means by pulling the trigger.

“I want every Nigeria to come together and support our coming together to rebuild our economy. To support the president, let us only leave politics. People are playing politics. The masses need a concrete evidence that the economy can be rebuilt, and there will be food on the table of almost all Nigerians and that is my vision.
