Addressing media in Nakuru, Yatich Kangugo, the council chairman in Nakuru county said that cohesiveness among communities reigns supreme in the existence of the nationhood and such is crucial as elders to take the bold initiative to bring people together.

“We want to engage our colleagues from the Mount Kenya region and also the Nyanza region among other communities to find ways of managing the unity of the people," he said.

They lauded President William Ruto for forging the broad based government to embrace all leaders of all shades as well as the communities to ensure that everyone participates in the decisions affecting the country.

Vice chairman of the Nakuru Myoot council Joseph Arap Sang said that as elders, they endorsed the move by Ruto to welcome everyone on board the government saying that the space can accommodate everyone.

He said that Nakuru county hosts many communities and as cosmopolitan county becomes sensitive to national politics.

Ruto for the past nine months has been crafting broad-based unity of the nation incorporating members of his previous political foe turned ally Raila Odinga to help stabilise the country after the Gen Z demonstrations last year.

The elders said that in the initiative being speared by the president, there are some leaders who are overzealous making reckless utterances that could derail the agenda of bringing everyone on board.

“Those leaders from all the sides of the leadership, who attempts to create a narrative of isolating communities from the other communities should be tamed and charged,” he said.

They called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) remain vigilant and monitor closely actions of leaders who attempt to rally isolation of communities campaign and reign in on them to preserve the cohesiveness of the country.

Council of elders across communities in Kenya from Nyanza’s have been playing crucial role in guiding political leaders on the national issues that may undermine the social fabric of the communities.

Since the impeachment of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, the politics of the country has been oscillating at high speed shaking the very foundations of the current administration as leaders jostle for partnerships ahead of the 2027 General Election.

This comes as Ruto's planned tour of the Mount Kenya region next week stirs political tensions.

In December 2024, Gachagua challenged Ruto to visit the region and explain to voters why the government had allegedly betrayed them despite their overwhelming support.

On Friday, March 28, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi told off Gachagua, asserting that the president does not need anyone's permission to visit any part of the country, including Mount Kenya.
