Kajol's Comeback Film 'Maa': Scripting and Production Details

The landscape of Hindi horror cinema is undergoing a subtle but significant transformation, with a burgeoning interest in films that delve into India’s rich cultural and mythological heritage. Among these, the upcoming mythological horror film ‘Maa’, starring Bollywood icon Kajol, is poised to make a substantial impact. Set against the mystic backdrop of West Bengal, the narrative centers on a mother's profound struggle to shield her daughter from an malevolent entity, a storyline deeply inspired by Kajol’s personal devotion to goddess Durga.
Writer Saiwyn Quadras, celebrated for his works like ‘Mary Kom’ and ‘Neerja’, revealed the extraordinarily swift development of the script. The idea for 'Maa' materialized when producer Ajay Devgn sought a horror narrative specifically for Kajol. Quadras, reflecting on Kajol's regular visits to Durga Puja pandals in Mumbai, conceived a powerful central theme: Durga Maa, the embodiment of maternal affection, whose love, often perceived as a vulnerability, transforms into an indomitable force—Maa Kali—when pushed to the brink to protect her child. This potent concept resonated instantly. The scripting process, initiated by Ajay Devgn’s challenge to complete it within ten days, saw Quadras narrating the story to Kajol just four days later. Her enthusiastic approval, and her belief in his ability to deliver the full script swiftly, further propelled the project.
Kajol’s performance in ‘Maa’ has been lauded by Quadras, who describes her as “magic,” noting her ability to transition seamlessly between intense emotional scenes and her usual composure. Her return to the big screen with 'Maa' marks a highly anticipated comeback after nearly three decades, with Kajol herself promising a “cinematic spectacle blessed by Kali Maa.” This gripping haunted thriller aims to deliver both chills and profound emotional depth, showcasing Kajol’s fierce feminine power.
Directed by Vishal Furia, ‘Maa’ is presented by Jio Studios and Devgn Films, with production credits going to Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Subbarayan, and Kumar Mangat Pathak serving as co-producer. The film is slated for a theatrical release on June 27, 2025. Discussions regarding a potential sequel hinge on the film's theatrical success and the producers' inclination to expand the narrative universe. Quadras himself has several ideas for continuing the story, some of which have already garnered interest from Ajay Devgn.
