However, the Red Devils were still alive. Bruno Fernandes's penalty revived the 2017 champions, who scored two more to advance.
First, Casemiro's clever pass found Kobbie Mainoo, who calmly slotted past the keeper to make it 3-4. Casemiro then crossed for Harry Maguire, who headed in the winner late in extra time after becoming a makeshift striker.
Man United had built a 4-2 lead after leading 2-0 in the first half, but Lyon scored four unanswered goals before collapsing.
With their team losing, Man United fans headed for the exits. Zirkzee, who is out with an injury, called out fans who left before the end. He shared a video of fans cheering on his Instagram.
"To all the fans who left when we were down. Listen to this," he wrote.
Those who left early missed arguably the biggest moment of the season.
"I feel for the people that had to leave when it was 4-2 because of the traffic,” Amorim said via The Independent. “They will be gutted!”
"The sound in the stadium for Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire's goals was the best sound,” he said. "A lot of people want to keep shirts, I just want to keep that sound. It is the best sound in the world.

"Can’t even explain what Manchester United is anymore. A rollercoaster of emotions. Just ridiculous what’s happened tonight. Nothing like it."
"You have to laugh. What a ridiculous football club. A bedlam like no other at Old Trafford for those closing minutes. United should not have made it as hard for themselves, but that determination to pull through will live long in the memory. What a moment for Maguire."
@KSI:
"That United performance has ruined my evening. Terrible hate watch."
"This win is up there with 'The Night in Paris', etched in memory. One of the greatest comebacks of all time."
earlier reported that Maguire shared his honest feelings after scoring an epic winner for Man United.
The England defender thought the goal could've been ruled out by VAR, but had a sigh of relief after it stood.
Maguire has had many ups and downs at Man United, but his goal seemed like a full-circle moment.
