Jaya Bachchan's Reaction to Amitabh and Rekha's Chemistry

In the late 1970s, Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha emerged as a popular Bollywood on-screen couple, captivating audiences with their undeniable chemistry. This on-screen magic sparked rumors of a real-life romance, which Rekha eventually admitted to. Jaya Bachchan, Amitabh's wife, was reportedly deeply affected by these rumors and the palpable connection between her husband and Rekha.

The release of the 1978 blockbuster 'Muqaddar Ka Sikandar' marked a significant moment in this saga. According to reports, during a private trial screening of the film, Rekha observed Jaya Bachchan tearing up during the love scenes. This emotional moment underscored the impact of the rumored affair on Jaya.

Shortly after the screening, Rekha claimed she heard that Amitabh had decided not to work with her again. Although they starred together in several successful films like Mr. Natwarlal, Khoon Pasina, Do Anjaane, Suhaag, and Ram Balram, their final film together was Silsila in 1981. Ironically, Silsila, directed by Yash Chopra, mirrored their rumored love triangle, adding another layer of intrigue to their story.

Despite the rumors of tension, Rekha consistently expressed respect for Jaya Bachchan. In a 1990s interview with Simi Garewal, Rekha praised Jaya's maturity, poise, dignity, and strength. When directly asked about her love for Amitabh, Rekha responded, "Absolutely. That’s a silly question. Everyone falls in love with him. Why should I pretend otherwise? Of course I did—and do."

After Silsila, Amitabh and Rekha never worked together again, marking the end of a significant chapter in Bollywood history. Their story, filled with shared moments, unspoken emotions, and undeniable chemistry, continues to resonate with those who followed their careers. The film Silsila, though initially underperforming, later gained cult status, symbolizing a love that remained unconfirmed yet deeply felt by many.
