CLUB STATEMENT:
We can confirm that we have today reached an agreement with our Men’s First Team Manager, Ivan Jurić, to end his spell at the club.
Ivan came to Southampton at a tough time and was tasked with trying to improve a squad in a difficult situation. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen performances progress the way we had hoped, but we would like to thank Ivan and his staff for their honesty and hard work as they fought against the odds to try and keep us up.
With relegation to the Championship now confirmed, we believe it is important to give fans, players and staff some clarity on the future as we head into a very important summer.
The process of finding a new manager to lead us as we look to secure an immediate return to the Premier League has now begun and is being led by Group Technical Director Johannes Spors.
In the meantime, Simon Rusk has agreed to take charge of the team as Interim Manager for the remaining seven fixtures of this season and will be assisted by Adam Lallana.
We remain incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our fans. Their continued dedication and passion, despite what has been a very tough season, is remarkable and is appreciated by everyone at the club.
Despite the challenges that relegation will bring, our goal is to restore a sense of pride for them in their team and club once again.
Defeat to Tottenham sees Southampton suffer the earliest relegation in Premier League history
“We know it’s a tough moment, a bad moment,” “But in another way I think the future of Southampton will be great, with the fans.
“We are relegated but they have showed a lot to their club, to the players they have, and I think it has to be really motivating for everybody to create something really good – much stronger than we created this year.
“I arrived from another world – Italy, Spain, Croatia – it’s completely the other mentality. It’s something great, respect. Our fans, all this season, a bad season, they were exceptional.
“We are disappointed. It has to be a big school for everything – for us, for me, for the players, for the club – to see what we did wrong.
“What went wrong? Did we give everything that we can in this one year, or can we do some things better? It has to be a big school for everybody.”
Trailing 2-0 at the interval, Jurić was encouraged by Saints’ second-half display, as his team kept pushing for a route back into the contest and pulled a goal back through Mateus Fernandes before Spurs’ very late third.
“In the first half when we played more of a low block then you have other types of problem,” he said. “They (Spurs) cannot create big chances but they create lots of situations, like set-pieces, and if you are physically not strong you suffer.
“Second half was the football I like. We pressed much more, we controlled the game, created chances, scored the goal. Second half I think was really good.
“I don’t want to be the worst team in Premier League history. This is our goal; from the next match, we have to prepare this.”
‘Recruitment is everything in football,’
‘We have a lot of talented young players, but with not many games in the Premier League. What I noticed most in three or four months here is the completely different physicality between us and the other teams in the league.
‘Now is the moment to understand the mistakes the club made in the last three or four years and start to create something really good.’
‘It’s our goal, to avoid being the worst team in Premier League history,’ said Juric, who wants to stay for next season. ‘The fans deserve more. Every person that works at Southampton has to do better and create something stronger.’
‘The love they show is incredible,’ said Juric.
‘They deserve more. Every person that works at Southampton has to do better and create something stronger.’
FAVOURITES TO BEOMCE NEW SOUTHAMPTON MANAGER:
Danny Rohl – 6/4
Simon Rusk – 4/1
Liam Rosenior – 6/1
Steve Cooper – 8/1
Sean Dyche – 10/1
Gary O’Neil – 10/1
: Hopefully Simon Rusk for the remainder of the season to surpass Derby’s point total. Followed by Danny Rohl from next season. 🙌 #SaintsFC
: Thank god for this. As we all know he should never have been appointed #saintsfc
: It could be a couple of things I guess – either Rohl’s situation has changed at Weds (have they not been paid) so we believe we can get him cheap/free now or plans to give to Rusk or Lallana until end of season. I’d be happy with either, can’t take much more this crap #saintsfc
: He came into an impossible job at the end of the day. There’s definetly things which I don’t agree with which he done but just wasn’t to be. I imagine the Danny rohl fanboys will be buzzing with it though #saintsfc
: Really glad this has happened for obvious reasons but let’s not put the blame on him too much. He was given an impossible task with the awful attitude of the players and lack of effort from them too. At least he tried to salvage something! #SaintsFC
: 7 managers in 2 and a half years under Sport Republic. Would love to know how much we have paid out in compensation. #SaintsFC
: Wow. Wasn’t expecting this news this morning but can’t say I’m disappointed. It did feel strange that yesterday was the first time he came over to the fans post game, if he has decided to admit his failure and walk away, allowing us to move on, then fair play. #SaintsFC
: This season, like every, i’ve travelled the country watching #saintsfc & genuinely can’t get my head round how some of our support are so fucking placid about what’s happened. We have been embarrassed as a club yet where’s the anger at the board? When did we get so fucking soft?
: Look like I was right all along about there being a 6 month break clause despite what the club said. So they’ll pay him up until the season ends. He had an impossible task tbh. This shouldn’t let Sporting Republic off the hook for our clusterfuck of a season #SaintsFC
: #saintsfc were linked to Rosenior before the Martin appointment. Is the SR strategy to go back to targets who we previously decided not to pursue. Remember Jones and Juric. At least we have a sporting director, which might avoid a Jones/Juric situation.
@Charlie_Mercer_: #saintsfc diabolical from Sport Republic from start to finish. Some shocking managerial appointments, badly timed combined with appalling recruitment. Let’s hope we can get Rohl now and back him. Also time for Gozetpe to do us a few favours in what has been one sided partnership
