Investigation into Nepali Student Deaths at Odisha's KIIT

A Nepalese student, Prisa Sah, was found dead in her hostel room at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, marking the second such incident within three months. This has prompted diplomatic initiatives from Nepal to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. Sah, an 18-year-old B.Tech computer science student, was discovered hanging in her room, leading to a police investigation into a suspected suicide.
Nepal's Foreign Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, expressed deep sadness and initiated diplomatic efforts to investigate the incident through high-ranking officials in India, Odisha, and the Nepali Embassy in Delhi. The Ambassador of Nepal to India, Shankar P Sharma, is coordinating with various entities for a thorough investigation. Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh confirmed the recovery and stated that an unnatural death case has been registered, with the body sent to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for post-mortem examination.
The incident has drawn comparisons to a similar case on February 16, when another Nepalese student, Prakriti Lamsal, died by suicide at the same institute. Lamsal's death led to protests and allegations of inaction by the university following her complaint of sexual harassment. The National Human Rights Commission of India had described the university's inaction as "gross negligence."
In response to the latest incident, the Odisha government has expressed condolences and assured a thorough investigation. The Department of Information and Public Relations stated that the government is supporting the family of the deceased. Student organizations, including Akhil Bharat Nepali Ekta Samaj and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), are demanding a swift and comprehensive investigation into the matter, citing concerns over student welfare and safety at the university.
KIIT University has yet to issue a formal statement on the recent death, but the back-to-back incidents have sparked unrest among international students, leading to demands for better grievance redressal mechanisms, mental health support, and a safer campus environment. Security has been heightened around the campus in response to the growing concerns.
