INTERVIEW: Baelfyr
Hi, it’s great to be able to sit down and introduce ourselves to a new audience.
We’re Baelfyr a 5 piece blackened death metal band from Peterborough UK made up of Allan (vocals) Harry (Guitar) Tom (guitar) Zak (bass) and Lorraine (drums)
With At the Mercy of a Vain God we’ve followed the same ethos that applies to all of our music, we’ve drawn upon our influences from the black and death metal world and tried to create something that’s unapologetically old school, heavy and atmospheric whilst still appealing to the modern metal listener.
With this being our first music video, we wanted it to serve as an introduction to the band, who we are, what we look like and what you can expect to see when you come and see us live. A simple black and white performance video with a dark atmosphere suited our vision perfectly.
Production for this single along with the rest of the EP was done by Neil Hudson at Grindfarm studios, Neil was really easy to work with and has a great ear for what sounds awesome in the mix, which meant we were able to really focus on getting each of our instruments takes nailed. He understood the raw aggressive sound we wanted to go for and really brought our vision to life!
That’s a really interesting, yet difficult question to answer as there is so much going on in the metal scene that I’m discovering right now. With Mercy, we’ve tapped into a really strong atmosphere of creeping dread in the first half of the song. I love the way the main section has a huge doomy vibe to it, which then leads into the absolute punishing brutality of the second half. I see a lot of bands trying to be as complicated as they can, trying to throw as many technical techniques into a song structure where it might not be needed. For me, the strength of Mercy is how it shows that sometimes a song that is more stripped back can be that much more impactful.
We have quite a few shows lined up for 2025, you can catch us in Nottingham, Worcester, Leicester, Northants Rocks, Mansfield, Bloodstock open air, Portsmouth, Southampton and Cambridge (did I miss any?) but keep an eye out on our bandsintown for an updated schedule.
On this EP you can expect more of our signature sound, big riffs, atmosphere, energy, relentless drumming and an intense vocal attack. It releases on the day that we play Bloodstock Festival so everyone at Bloodstock is invited to the best EP release party ever.
Even though we’re based in Peterborough, we’re actually spread out amongst the country so the specific area of the country isn’t necessarily fundamental to our sound and even though there are influences present from other UK based bands, alot of our sound is derived from American and European influences. I think you could pick the band up and put us anywhere in the world and we’d retain our signature sound.
At The Mercy Of A Vain God shares a similar DNA to our previous two single releases as they were all written and evolved together as the band geared up for entering the metal scene. However they differ by having very individual lyrical themes and feelings.
More than anything, all I hope for is that anyone who listens to our music walks away from it having enjoyed themselves and would be interested in checking out anything we do in the future.
